Back to Beijing: MulteFire Open Day Event Recap

By Outi Niemi, MulteFire Alliance Secretary and Director of Operations Management – Digital Automation, Nokia

The MulteFire Alliance recently hosted its third MulteFire Open Day in Beijing and our ninth Open Day overall! The Open Days originated in Beijing in June 2016 and we return every year because of strong regional interest in MulteFire™ technology. I’d like to thank Huawei for hosting this year’s MulteFire Open Day as well as the Alliance Members Meeting that ran in conjunction.

MulteFire Alliance President Mazen Chmaytelli and myself with Dr. Lei Wan, Head of Wireless Standards for Huawei and one of our featured speakers during the Open Day.

One of the highlights from the Open Day this time around was that we heard from several new speakers that were able to provide insight into how MulteFire technology will positively impact the industrial IoT space.

Mr. Kaikuo Zhuo from BYD Company and Mr. Yanbin Meng with Rockwell Automation covered specific use cases that will benefit with MulteFire, while Mr. Jiadong Du with Alliance of Industrial Internet, which recently signed a liaison agreement with the MulteFire Alliance, shared how it is advancing LTE connectivity for the industrial internet. We also had presentations from Dr. Lei Wan and Dr. Haibin Wu with Huawei on MulteFire for enterprise applications. Alex Glaser with Harbor Research rounded out the presentations with his research firm’s findings on the market opportunity for MulteFire in both industrial IoT and enterprise segments. It also helped the Huawei provided simultaneous translation of all presentations!

Alex also led a panel discussion with representatives from the Alliance of Industrial Internet, Baicells, Huawei, and Nokia. There were a number of questions from the audience that asked about performance, latency, and handovers, as well as deployment models around private LTE and neutral host networks. Our Release 1.0 Technical Paper does an excellent job of providing detailed answers to these questions – and I encourage you to download the English version here or the Chinese version here. Stay tuned for more details on MulteFire technology trials and solutions.

Finally, the Open Day concluded with a field trip to Alliance member CAICT Laboratory where attendees had the chance to see a live demo of Huawei’s MulteFire-based eLTE-U solution. The technology demo showcased an eLTE-U wireless network, where an Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) integrated with a wireless module is connected to the eLTE-U base station, which sends navigation guide control signals for shelf rack moving and automated self-charging.
